Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough In A Patient With Enlarged Spleen

hello there, i was diagnosed with mono and an enlarged spleen five days ago while home on break from college. my cough has severely worsened and each cough is causing pain in my left side. should i be concerned about the possibility of rupturing my spleen from exacerbated coughing?

Hi! Indeed you concerns are valid. However, it is not so easy to rupture your spleen through persistent coughing as the spleen, though it may be enlarged, is kept protected by adipose tissue and lies safely below the diaphragm. The only way to "rupture" the spleen is through a knife stab injury. There are countries like Malaysia in which malaria is endemic and most people have subtle spleen issues (enlargement of which there are 5 levels or grades). I have yet to hear of anyone rupturing their spleen through a violent fit of coughing ever. You are safe. Be happy. Obliged, Dr. Neel Kudchadkar
