General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. - Rubella has skin rash & flu like symptoms to mother , these can be managed well by symptomatic treatment. - Rubella in early pregnancy ( before 12 weeks ) is notorious to cause serous fetal malformations which can not be managed once it has attacked particular organ of baby. Prevention of infection /exposure in pregnancy /by taking rubella vaccine at least 6 months before conception is the best way. * so it is better to abort than to give birth to a diseased/ handicapped child,in case you get the infection in pregnancy. Thanks.
