Greetings. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.
It is perfectly normal for the
heart rate to go up while exercising. As a matter of fact, there is a formula for this: 220 - age, which means your normal heart should go up to 158 beats per minute, and it even would tell that it is functioning perfectly. If during this exercise you experienced tightness in your chest and/or
shortness of breath and/or fatigue (unusual compared to other times), then you should be worried and discuss these matters with your cardiologist. Age of 62 years old, after all, is considered a risk factor for
high blood pressure and
cardiovascular disease. Therefore, a full cardiac check-up would be recommended to you, if I were your treating cardiologist. I would recommend an EKG and an
echocardiogram (to evaluate the size and function of the heart muscle, also of the valves). Judged by the findings from these two tests, it may be recommended to perform a cardiac
stress test (treadmill, but with electrodes attached to your chest, which allow to value the electrical and conduction systems of the heart, in physical activity state). If the latter comes back positive, a coronary angiogram would be the appropriate approach at the time. Also, you can discuss with your cardiologist, about the possibility of starting any medication that is beneficial in the primary prevention of the cardiovascular diseases and controlling your
hypertension, if you are diagnosed with it.
I hope I was helpful with my answer. Wish you a good health.
Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
