Suggest Treatment For Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

Hi, I am currently 16 weeks pregnant. My brother was diagnosed with pseudomonas aerguinosa about two years ago in his ears. I was just wondering if me being around him is going to harm me or the baby in any way? Especially after I read articles about still birth and other problems associated with pseudomonas.

Hi. Thank you for writing to HCM.

It is very unlikely that you will acquire a pseudomonas infection by simply being around your brother who has a localised ear infection with pseudomonas. You must take precautions however to not get into direct contact with the ear discharge and even if you do, wash your hands well with an antiseptic solution.

A pseudomonas ear infection affects the middle ear locally and has very little chances of spreading into the bloodstream or into the womb. It is only then when it becomes a threat to the baby. The chances for this to occur by just being around your brother is negligible.

I would advise you to not worry so much about this. At 16 weeks the baby has low risk to be affected by any maternal infections.

Hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any more questions.
