Suggest Treatment For Painful Ear, With Muffled Hearing Following A Flu

Ive been really sick for about 5-7 days now (bad cough, runny nose, headaches, fever), and was told it was the flu. I had a very bad coughing fit today, and during it, it all of a sudden felt like there was water in my ear. Everything sounds muffled, and its painful, and also is making my head ache pretty badly. The feeling of water being in the ear has slightly subsided a couple hours later, but all other symptoms remain.. Any ideas on what happened, or what i should do? Ill also mention that i wear hearing aids for moderate to severe hearing loss, and had surgery on both ears when i was 4 years old. I currently don't have a hearing aid for the ear I've been asking about, but even without it I can still tell the difference.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have got an ear infection along with fluid behind the eardrum and it has occurred secondary to cold..
There is a connection g tube between the middle ear and back of nose known as Eustachian tube and when there is cold the mucous can get accumulated in the Eustachian tubes as well as there can be fluid accumulation behind eardrum that is in the middle ear leading to feeling of water, clogging, muffled hearing..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can do an Otoscopic examination and if needed x rays and MRI scan can also be advised..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestant nasal spray containing Oxymetazoline or Xylometazoline..
You can also be advised Antibiotic and analgesic ear drops..
In case if still there is no improvement surgical drainage of ears by putting a small incision through the eardrum can relieve..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
