Suggest Treatment For Painful Blisters In Vagina

Hello,I am 20 years old and just had sex with my boyfriend for the first time about 2 weeks ago. One night was pretty rough and there was not enough lubrication. I got very red, swollen, and had what seemed to be cuts soon afterward. It burned to urinate for a while because of the sores. My boyfriend had a few small cuts as well on his penis but they have healed completely within a few days. I assumed everything was normal, I would heal soon and we would just need to be gentler next time... however since then, the swelling went down but the cuts seemed to turn into painful blisters around the area. There is one in particular that is not on my genitals but located up near the hairline that has been painful and large. I’ve also had an odorous discharge throughout.
This whole process has lasted about a week and a half, all symptoms are now disappearing but I’m wondering what could be wrong or if blistering is normal following rough sex for a virgin?
The reason I come to you is because I am living abroad in Mexico at the moment and don’t have international health insurance. The soonest I can see my gynecologist is in one month to do any testing if necessary…

Thank you for the question and I am happy to help.

The most likely explanation for the appearance of painful blisters in the 1-2 weeks after intercourse is related to a herpes outbreak. Herpes is very common and about 1 in 6 persons will show signs of prior exposure if they were to be tested. After exposure, it takes about 1 weeks for the blisters to appear and this fits well with the symptoms that you are describing. Herpes in the genital area is no always confined to the labia - it can involve the surrounding skin, vagina, cervix, etc. Often we treat this with Valtrex but given that you are late in the course of this problem, it is no longer indicated. You should talk to your doctor about getting tested to sort this out further.

I hope that this helps and good luck!
