Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am 57 yrs old and have significant pain in my right hand at the base of my thumb. It is a sharp cramp-like pain that is worse when I write or try to grip anything. I have osteoarthritis in the joints of my fingers and thumbs but this is a new symptom. Over the holidays I did work for a gift shop tying bows on gift bags and the pain started when I finished. I am a clinic office coordinator so type a lot as well, but so far don t have numbness in my hands. If the holiday job aggravated my thumb, would ice or heat help? I sometimes take Alieve but try to limit use because of stomach upset. Please let me know your thoughts on relieving the pain. Thank you!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. it looks to me that you are having inflammation of tendon sheaths most probably of thumb.. It is also called as Dequervain's teno synovitis. In this disease there is pain on movements specially which you have described. Other possibilities of pain in hand are wrist synovitis and carpel tunnel. But these two conditions are painful during rest also . So I think this is not there in your case. For confirmation you need to see an orthopaedic doctor. He can examine you and confirm it. I do not think x ray will be needed. Treatment is analgesics, splinting and steroid injection at tendon sheath.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
