Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Rib Cage

I was bucked off of a mule 3 months ago. Since then, i cannot lay on my either side long at night. After a few minutes of laying on my side i experience pain right under my rib cage or left rib cage and also pain in my mid back. My spine and sides under my rib cage is tender. I thought i might have pulled some oblique muscles, but this has not gotten better. I do feel better when i am sitting or standing. If i lay on my back when i sleep..it is not as painful, but i am not a back sleeper! I am a female who is 49 years old. Could i have a fractured my back? I have not seen a physician for this problem since i hoped it would go away with time!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for writing your query
After going through your suffering, the pain could be of costochondritis (painful when ribs are pressed), may be relieved by following measure along with the drugs like ibuprofen-
1.Avoiding unnecessary exercise or activities that make the symptoms worse; avoid contact sports until there is improvement in symptoms, and then return to normal activities only as tolerated.
2. Rib belt along with hot water fomentation helps.
3.You may be given a local anaesthetic and steroid injection in the area that is tender if normal activities become very painful and the pain does not respond to drugs.
As far as outlook ofcostochondritis is concerned it is usually self limiting and may go away of its own most people will recover fully.
If the problem persists you may see a doctor to rule out the other possibilities.
Take care
