Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling At The Site Of Wasp Bite
I got stung by a wasp 30 hours ago on the back of my hand. It is swollen and red from the base of my fingers to just past my wrist. The area is warm. The swelling is constant but the pain in my knuckles has greatly diminished. Is this normal or should I have concern?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Wasp sting reaction is mostly allergic in nature. Mild to moderate reactions can be managed at home... but severe reactions ( with symptoms of swelling on face/ allergic hives all over the body/wheezing)needs hospital management . You seem to have a moderate reaction . You can follow following steps for managing the swelling & pain. - Can apply ice pack to the swelling to get relief from pain & swelling. - Keep the part clean & dry to avoid secondary infection. - Application of steroid creme/ calamine lotion would relieve allergic itching. - Over the counter anti inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen( twice a day )after food & anti allergic pills like Chlopheniramine( once a day) can be taken.. No relief at all in 2-3 days indicates presence of infection. In such a case consult your doctor for antibiotic advise as per need. Thanks.
