Suggest Treatment For Nose Bleed

Hi doc, in the past three months I randomly experience a nose bleed from my left nostril. Most recently while washing my face before bed. I do use a nasal decongestant nightly...but have been avoiding the left nostril in the past few days. Otherwise, I m healthy, no other medications. I take a daily multivitamin Should I be concerned?

Hi. Thank you for writing to HCM.

It appears that the random nose bleeding may be occurring due to dryness of the nasal cavity. This could be due to the regular usage of decongestants which dry up the nose or due to the generally dry or air conditioned environment. Drying of the nose leads to crusting and bleeding.

It is advised that you use saline nose drops or sprays 3-5 times a day for a month. If your nasal bleeding persists in spite of this then have an ENT evaluate your nose. The use of nasal decongestants is not advised for more than 7 days at any point of time.

Hope this information was helpful. Do let me know if you have any other concerns.
