Suggest Treatment For Nausea, excessive Salivation And Involuntary Burping

My girlfriend periodically has excessive amounts of saliva. So much so that she has to spit almost constantly when it happens and it sometimes makes her feel like she s going to vomit. Only when it s really bad does she feel like she s going to vomit, and the nausea is accompanied by involuntary, large burps. To my knowledge, there s nothing she s taken that s made it go away other than laying a towel down until she falls asleep. Upon waking, it s usually gone away. We ve only tried tums so far, under the assumption it may be heartburn, though she has no other symptoms when it comes about related to heartburn. The only other odd thing I could add is that she doesn t typically burp. Not the way I do at least. It s more like an involuntary growling noise from her throat while laying in a certain position.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The description of the health issue leads to the provisional diagnosis of ptylism or sialorrhea. It is excessive secretion of saliva or deficient clearance of saliva from mouth.

It can be due to underlying disease such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), mouth infections, pancreatitis, liver disease, regular intake of medicines such as pilocarpine, ketamine etc., upper respiratory tract infection etc.

To treat this problem, you should consult a physician to find the underlying cause if any cause is present. If there is no cause for it, medicines such as anticholinergics can control the salivation.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your girlfriend feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
