Suggest Treatment For Ligament Tear In The Finger

I went to have an xray done of my finger because I was walking my dog and he jumped out at another dog and pulled my finger along with the leash. It is not broken or fractured but may have torn legaments. Can I just keep a splint on the finger and wait a few weeks to let it heal or do I need surgery to take care of this?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, conservative (non surgical) management yields satisfactory functional outcomes in case of ligament injuries involving the fingers.

Simple immobilization using a finger cot splint will serve the purpose till the soft tisue heals. Also, this splint will help in protecting the injured area from further injury.

Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day.

Use simple analgesic like advil or aleve to help decrease the pain and inflammation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
