Hi there

Usually when a patient develops a DVT or blood clot, the valves of the superficial veins in the leg get damaged i.e. you can end up with varicose veins.
This leads to a heavy feeling in the legs with swelling and even burning hot feet. There can also be changes in the skin colour.. To prevent the swelling and assist with blood circulation, I suggest using a compression stocking during the day.

He should also elevate his leg for atleast 30 minutes a day and if possible sleep with the affected leg raised by a pillow or two.

You didn't mention if your father is currently on warfarin/ anticoagulant. if this is the case, there are many drugs which will interact with warfarin and compromise his treatment. The safest pain relief will be topical gels such as diclofenac gel. Alternatives include oral paracetamol.

Hope this helps.
