Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic.
Keloid is due to excessive formation of scar as part of the
wound healing process. They are raised above the surface unlike normal scaring which is flat/level with the skin.
Keloids are usually itchy and may extend beyond the actual wound margins with finger like projections. They may be painful as well as sensitive to touch so much so that they hurt even when clothes rub against them.
Keloids are best managed with intralesional
steroids e.g intralesional
triamcinolone acetonide, which is a depot injection.
The injection causes breakdown of the excessive
collagen tissue present in keloidal scar, thereby causing them to flatten. The injection might be repeated after 3 weeks if required.
Other options are CO 2 Laser vaporization; 5-Florouracil (5-FU) Infection.
Symptoms such as itching and pain reduce considerably as the keloid begins to flattens.
You may visit a
dermatologist for more details and appropriate treatment.
