Suggest Treatment For Irritation Of Nose And Eyes With Discharge

Hello, I recently noticed I am suffering from some kind of an irritation or an infection in my nose/eyes. My eyelids, especially the corners, sometimes start itching pretty badly, and also I get some sort of a discharge from the eyes in small amounts that can smell funny at times. It s the worst when I wake up, at that point I sometimes get my eyelashes stuck together by the dry discharge from the eyes, but when I wash the eyes nicely and with soap it usually goes away, I can also get it randomly during the day, but it passes. I don t get red eyes or any swelling, just itch and discharge. Also I get a runny nose and sneeze a lot, mostly in the morning, when the eyelids problem is the worst. The mucus from the nose can also sometimes smell funny, and isn t a clear color, it has like a yellow tint to it, but that also comes and goes. It s lasting for a little bit more that a week now, and, even though it is getting a bit better now, it still bothers me. Do I need to see a doctor or is it something that can be resolved by its own?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. In my opinion you have acute dacryocystorhinitis and allergic rhinitis. I would recommend that you see an ENT specialist to have this treated effectively.

The itching in your eyes, at the corners and in your eyelids is due to allergy. The runny nose and sneezing also points towards allergy of the nose (Allergic rhinitis).
The sticky eyelids, funny smell and yellowish nature of the discharge both from the eyes (lacrymal glands) and the nose is suggestive of a bacterial infection.

If I were your treating physician, I would prescribe anti-allergy eye drops and an antibiotic eye ointment for local application in addition to an oral course of antibiotics for about 5 days. I would also recommend saline nasal sprays and oral antihistamines to control the nasal allergy. Do see your ENT specialist to get a prescription and discuss my views on the management of this condition.

You should expect recovery in a weeks time with the above treatment. At the same time do keep a watch on the potential things that you are allergic to and make a note of the environment whenever you sneeze or need to rub your eyes. It will be helpful in future to avoid exposure to these stimuli. You can get a skin prick test to detect the allergens you are allergic too.

Hope you recover soon. Do let me know if you have any further questions.
