Suggest Treatment For Inguinal Hernia

We need to find the best surgeon in our area (within 100 miles) to repair my husband s inguinal hernia. Though he is a retired engineer, he enjoys working on the farm, helping people with equipment or home repairs, and he recently moved my aunt from the snow belt to the South--hence the hernia. He is 73, in good general health, not overweight at all though he is a type 2 diabetic who controls his blood sugar with diet alone. He will be miserable if he cannot continue his strenuous lifestyle.

Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi. Thanks fr the query. Inguinal hernia is a very common condition especially in elderly. In them, we see more of a direct variety due to the lax muscles of the abdominal wall. Hernia itself is not a dangerous condition, but the complications arising out of it (intestinal obstruction) can be disastrous. If I were your treating surgeon, I would suggest him to first get the sugar level under control, then undergo a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh, and take rest for atleast 6 weeks and avoid strenous work for 6 months. I would counsel him that his health is more important than his lifestyle.
