Suggest Treatment For Infection Of Cuticle In Finger

I have a finger that has become infected around the cuticle. This has happened before with pus forming for a day or so and once the pus is out, the infection usually clears up easily. However, this infection has been present for one week and two days. I was worse than the others ever were without much pus. HOWEVER, it has begun to improve some but is still pretty sore when bumped against something. I have treated it with triple antibiotic ointment and now bacitracin ointment. I have also soaked it in salt water usually morning and night. Sometimes I have kept a bandaid on at night with the medication. I took Bactrim for one day morning and night but then remembered I had failed to tell my doctor I only have one kidney so he said stop the Bactrim. I am also allergic to PCN. Any suggestions???

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the symptoms of pus discharge near the cuticle of nail along with soreness and pain and bruising seems to be due to infection in the area of skin near the nail and occurs commonly due to causes like bacterial or fungal infection..
This condition is known as PARONYCHIA..
It can occur due to conditions like traumatic injury to the side of the nail like while washing clothes or dishwashing, injury while cutting nail, nail biting habit , overzealous manicure etc..
As you have only one kidney so the entire renal function is dependant on it therefore medication especially antibiotics and painkillers has to be taken with great caution..
I would therefore suggest you to consult a General Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation is generally sufficient for diagnosis..
You can be advised to apply a combination of steroid, antibiotic and antifungal ointment over it..
If it is painful topical application of numbing ointment and taking tylenol can relieve..
Do cool compresses over it..
If the lump is large and painful Incision and drainage followed by a course of antibiotics and painkillers will relieve..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
