Suggest Treatment For Infected Wound On Thumb Nail

Hi Doc, I hit my thumb nail hard while playing hockey, and it bruised completely. My thumb cuticle filled with blood and a day later it drained. A few days later it has been draining dark colored pus and smells horrendous. I ve been a washing it frequently, using an anti septic and neosporene. What else should I do? It is inflamed currently and drains still.

I am Dr. Saleha and I have read your message in detail, I understand your concern and will try to help you in this.

I am sorry to know about your problem.
I suppose you didn't seek medical attention after this happened, now it seems that you got germs when thumb got a wound and this wound has got infected now, that's why it's draining puss and smelling bad.

I will suggest you to immediately seek medical attention and get your wound checked up by a doctor. Washing it or applying antiseptic will not help you much in my opinion. You will have to get a complete check up , at this stage you might need antibiotic course and cleaning or the wound off debris and pus.

This might lead to extension of puss to neighbouring parts of the limb and even gangrene may occur, I suppose it's already necrotising the tissue which is the cause of bad smell.

This can well lead to gangrene sepsis and amputation or life threatening issues so it is suggest to immediately seek medical advise and get the treatment started.
