Suggest Treatment For Infected Bursitis

Hello, my boyfriend was recently diagnosed with bursitis. He has been in pain for the past two days with no relief. He just moved his arm and instantly his elbow felt better, but he says he smelled something funny. Now I m worried he had infection bursitis and the sac has ruptured and could go into his bloodstream. He is on Keflex and another antibiotic as a precaution to treat for MRSA if that was the case. Should we be concerned or is this something that can wait until the morning to call our PCP?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
I have studied your case. Bursitis infection is very rare and I do not think that your friend is having this. Infection causes fever and severe pain. I would recommend you to apply hot water fomentation and volitran ointment. He can also take Brufen tablet for pain relief.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. I would not suggest that he should take any antibiotics.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
