Suggest Treatment For Hirsutism And Brittle Nails

Hi
I'm female and generally have hair everywhere that would be acceptable for a man.

Meaning my upper lip, chin, navel, anus & lower back. I suspect this could be a thyroid issue but I'm not sure and I don't know what to say to my doctor.

I also suffer with very brittle nails (they peel off in layers from the top) and my lips peel, from the inside...the problem worsens at random times.

Please let me know any suggestions.

Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
A history of excessive hair alongwith brittle nails may indicate a thyroid anomaly. You can get a thyroid profile done(T3,T4,TSH) done . That should pick up any change and then you can go to a doctor with evidence. If that is not it hirsutism can also be due to some steroid hormone changes but we would do that only after ruling thyroid out.

Hope this helps,
Please feel free to address any further clarifications ,
