Thanks for contacting HCM. Your brother could have developed diabetes as side effect of beclomethasone as it is not meant to be taken for long duration. Ask his doctor so that he can get of the drug, please do not stop beclomethasone suddenly, instead, under medical guidance taper it off gradually. As for controlling diabetes- basics of blood sugar control are diet(most important) with exercise along with medication. He can try following-
1.     If you are obese try to loose weight as it will help tremendously.
2.     Eat frequent small meals at three hours intervals.
3.     Avoid starchy, fried, sugary, fast and junk food.
4.     Avoid white rice and white bread.
5.     Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, salads and fruits(avoid very sweet fruits if your blood glucose levels are very high).
6.     Eat nuts regularly especially almonds.
7.     Eat fish( either baked, boiled or roasted) at least three times a week.
8.     use olive oil for cooking.
9.     Exercise regularly especially aerobic activities like walking.
10.     Sleep for 6-8 hours daily.
11.      Take skimmed unsugared milk, curd and yogurt regularly.
Also under guidance of his doctor put him on medication for controlling bood sugar. Metformin with glibenclamide can be a choice. Regards

Dear sir/ madam, your blood sugar has been elevated due to two causes. One is fever (infection) and the second is steroid intake. I feel he is in the normal progression of diabetes where with few years he would require an increased dose of medication. But unfortunately you have not mentioned the current drug dosage, height and weight of your brother. In case of elevated sugars , to prevent any diabetes related complications we would prefer a short term insulin. You can chart his blood sugars and get back to us so that we can be of more help. Wishing you the best.
