Suggest Treatment For High Cholesterol Level And ALT

Hi, I have high cholesterol and decided to try a natural supplement . It had citrus and palm extract. I decided to get my cholesterol check on my own 3 months before my annual check up to see if it worked. It happened to have liver enzymes with it. Everything was great, AST 25, ALT 23, Gtt 36, The only thing bad was my cholesterol of 260. I took the supplement for 4 weeks before my appt. When I got my labs from my annual my doctor was shocked to find my ALT-703, AST 439, GTT 90 WOW, never had a problem before. My doctor order an Ultra sound, everything normal also my bilirubin, alkaline phos and PT/INR normal. No enlagement of liver also. One week later my ALT is 623, AST 243 but my Gtt went up alittle to 108, not quite sure why. I do drink wine regularly but never had elevated gtt, alt or ast except when my doctor tried a statin. I beleive it was the supplement. I hope things get back to normal. Do you see this much and is it likely it will go back to normal and how long on average does it take. I have to still take my lisinipril and HCTZ for my BP, I stopped everything else including wine. I am 55, weigh 145, 5'3" Thanks Sue

Sue,
I realize another doctor answered your query, but I did want to add that I have seen this happen frequently with over the counter supplements sometimes to the point of liver failure. There is also always the potential for drug/supplement interactions. Always consult a trained Registered Dietitian prior to taking supplements as they can be very dangerous as well as helpful, but one must know a great deal to prescribe supplements safely.

I believe your liver will heal as it looks like your numbers are decreasing. I would not stress the liver further by drinking alcohol at all in any amount at least until liver enzymes are normal and gtt has dropped to normal.
