Suggest Treatment For Herpes Simplex Infection

I recently learned I have herpes simplex 2. Apparently I ve had it a while, but I recently switched doctors, and my new doctor tests asymptomatic people for herpes. Anyway, I started Valtrex immediately to reduce the risk to my partner, but I ve had minor breakthrough bleeding the whole time since I started the medication. It s really bothering me, and my confidence has already taken a huge blow from the diagnosis. Is there anything I can do about the bleeding? I have a Mirena IUD as my primary birth control method and I use condoms.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Vaginal bleeding is the side effect of Valtrex, especially during the first month of treatment. The bleeding is benign and not of major concern. Irregular bleeding will subside once Valtrex is discontinued or you reach 2nd or 3rd month of treatment with Valtrex.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
