General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Madam,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and understand your concerns.

One of the functions of the liver is to produce a protein called albumin. Patients with liver cirrhosis have developed permanent damage to their liver, causing portions of the liver to be replaced with scar tissue. When this happens, the liver's ability to produce proteins (such as albumin) becomes impaired. This is the reason, that your husbands albumin level is low.
Any patient with cirrhosis and an elevated AFP, particularly with steadily rising blood levels, will either most likely develop liver cancer or actually already have an undiscovered liver cancer. Patients with various types of chronic liver diseases without documented liver cancer can have mild or even moderate elevations of AFP, though usually less than 500 ng/ml. Normal level of AFP in adults is 0-20 ng/ml.

With such a presentation on my clinic, I would consider taking a biopsy of your husbands liver, in order to determine the nature of the lesions he has.
Beside that I would recommend your husband visits his local hepatologist, in order to start the treatment for his liver hepatitis/cirrhosis.

Hope I answered to your question. Don't hesitate to ask again.

Take Care,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
