Suggest Treatment For Hashimoto S Thyroiditis And Dryness In The Eyes

I ve been having eye problems for over a year now and it seems to be getting worse. My eyes feel like there is something in them, they also feel dry and more often now they do not focus together. I am noticing that they are also more sensitive to bright light. I have Hashimotos and am worried that this is another branch or disorder. I ve seen 3 eye Doctors and the specialist said it was simply weak eye muscles. I do exercises but it is not helping.

welcome to hcm,
i really appreciate your concern,
No dry eyes and photosensitivity can not be a symptom of Hashimoto thyroiditis.
1. Hashimoto's thyroiditis mean your thyroid is getting attacked by thyroid antibodies - this essentially doesn't mean you have hypothyroidism at present. But you are at a higher risk of developing hypothyroidism.

2. Thyroid hormone replacement is based on thyroid function tests and not based on symptoms

3. Initial phase of thyroiditis will have features of hyperthyroidism as when thyroid is destroyed by auto antibodies the stored thyroxine in thyroid is released into blood.

Regarding your Thyroid:

I suggest you to have your thyroid function tests repeated after a month, ideal time when you meet your Endocrinologist. . If your TSH is on a rise you can start on thyroid hormone replacement. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is not iodine deficiency hypothyroidism . Selenium is useful in early stages. Gluten free diet - doubtful role.
So better treatment option is to wait and follow up your thyroid function test and start on thyroid hormone replacement when needed as suggested by your GP. Your options will be T4 alone, T3 + T4 or if you are going for natural products armour thyroid. It is not of much side effects if you are taking this medication with periodic thyroid function monitoring.
please let me know if you have any further queries.
thanks. regards
