HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

No, it can also be transmitted when there is no active infection present, this is called asymptomatic transmission. It is common.

The use of anti viral medication would help to both reduce the frequency of the attacks and also reduce the chance of asymptomatic transmission.

Normally when an acute attack is going to occur, you may feel discomfort in the area with an initial red appearance, this would be followed by the rash.
The rash may be small fluid filled lesions that would then open and crust over.
The entire attack is normally associated with pain.

Eg of antiviral medication are valcyclovir or acyclovir

I hope this helps
