Saw family doctor and said I had a finger nail fungus. Said to soak in epson salts for 15 minutes a day and then put vicks on nail, around nail and under nail. The fingus is causing the nail to raise and become deformed. Have done as recommended for 1 week, have trimmed nail back as far as I can but have seen no difference. Do you have any suggestions.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
A nail affected by Fungal infection Or onychomycosis appears discoloured; deformed; thickened; brittle; subungual debris accumulates beneath the nail plate and separates it from the nail bed. I would suggest a Nail plate KOH examination to look for fungal elements, which would confirm the diagnosis. Only oral antifungals work for Onychomycosis e.g Fluconazole, Terbinafine Or itraconazole. Topical antifungals like ciclopirox olamine or Amrolfine hydrochloride in a specialized base constituted as a nail lacquer to enhance penetration, may also be used simultaneously. Treatment is as long as 2-3 months for a finger nail Onychomycosis. Antifungals are prescription drugs and therefore I would suggest that you seek an appointment with a dermatologist in your region for the needful.
