Suggest Treatment For Food Poisoning, Diarrhea And Vomiting

My 78 yr old aunt suddenly developed what appears to be food poisoning, as I did 3 days ago. We cannot find a common denominator as to what caused it. I am much better but she is into day 1 after a night of vomiting and just wet diarreahea. A pharmisist told me to avoid anything that would stop the diarreahea because it is cleaning the pathogens from her gut. Should she take diphnoxylaye/atropine

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Your symptoms could be due to gastroenteritis. I would suggest to consult the primary care physician and get examined and undergo stool test and blood test of necessary. Generally it resolves in the 4 to 8 hours with supportive care. It produce diarrhea and vomiting that lead to dehydration.

As a treating physician, I will give following advises. Antibiotics: ciprofloxacin along with probiotics. Take over the counter oral rehydration solution to prevent the dehydration. Avoid solid foods. You can take boiled rice with added salt and lemon. Tablet pantoprazole plus domperidone on empty stomach. Take more chicken breast soups, yogurt, curd rice, banana, apple sauce and toast.

Hope this may help you. Let me know for further health query.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
