Suggest Treatment For Fibula Fracture

Hi Dr. I am 36 years old male. I broke my fibula in the bottom of my ankle of left leg on 31 of August 2014 I went to emergency and they put me cast. The emergency unit told me that I may not need surgery. On the 9th of Sept 14 I was called for X ray and I was told that my bone is dislocated 3mm and I need to go through surgery. I was operated on the 11th of Sept 14 and they put me a metal and six screws . On 22nd of Sept. 14 I was called an x-ray I was told the bone is aligned well now and they gave me another appointment for an X-ray which will be the 20th of October 14. I have lighter cast on about 20 days now. So now I am waiting until the 20th of October which be nearly 6 weeks and I am hoping my bone will heal. My question is was it necessary to go through surgery about 3mm bone misalignment? Was there other alternative or method that could fix my bone without surgery. I have no pain at all, I recently stopped blood thinning injection after I developed symptoms like fatigue, lost of appetite, bleeding in the teeth, not sleeping enough hours, confusion or stress. when I stopped like four days ago I am getting better now. Please help Jason

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that you got fracture of left fibula and you operated by plate and screws . As your fracture was near joint so it was better to operation however decision depends on doctor to doctor and type of fracture. Alternative method of treatment of it by plaster cast which can treat it without operation. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it. I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. Wishing you good health. Take care.
