Suggest Treatment For Fever And Cough In A Child

Last Wednesday I took my 3 year son to the emergency room with fever and a really bad cough. They found he had strep throat. Since that day he has not been eating and his fever will not stay away. He is starting to look like he is losing weight and frail. He barely eats even when spoon fed. We are keeping him hydrated, even though hes only taking sips. This is his 2nd time with strep this year. I know his swollen tonsils may be whats stopping him from eating but now im getting concerned. He wont even drink the pediasure. Should we take him back to hospiatal or wait the 10 days to finish Amoxicillin?

Strep throat will give your son all the symptoms you describe.Amoxillin is a good antibiotic for strep throat.With inflammed tonsils, swallowing may be very difficult.I will suggest :
-Continue with amoxicillin
-Add a pain/anti-pyretic/antiinflammatory medication like ibumol
-Give the child warm liquids like lemon water and tea
-Give cold liquids occasionally to help numb the throat
-An air humidifier will be good in the room
-Sucking of throat lozenges
-Try gargling with look-warm salt water if the child can
If the symptoms persist, you will need to see your Doctor for reevaluation and to judge the need for an amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination since its not the first time the child is having this infection.
