Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If your grandchild has barking
cough than
croup might be the most likely diagnosis. It is a self limiting viral condition and most of the time causes no serious problems in children but cough can be strong and breathing in might be noisy. it generally improves in a week even without treatment. What I would suggest is:
1. make sure the child is hydrated well, offer water often
2. using
nebulizer with saline might help but is generally not a long effect and you might need to repeat it during the day and is not dangerous to do so.
3. sometimes having hypertonic saline might be more helpful- to do so buy hypertonic saline solution in the pharmacy or if you can not buy hypertonic saline add some salt cristals in the room of the nebulizer where you place saline solution.
4. Most cough syrups are not found to be effective in studies so i would say do not use cough syrups especially if you tried for a few days and did not help. The only one that is found to help is gaiffenessine and you might use this one and try, if it helps with the mucus than continue it for 7-10 days, if it does not help in 2-3 days do not continue it anymore.
5. Honey tea might help with cough according to studies and you might offer it to your grandchild especially at night before bed.
6. oral
steroid single dose is very effective in croup, you might see the improvement very soon and it is enough to have single dose in the majority of cases. Most used steroid is soldesam and dose is calculated by the childs weight- a doctor should prescribe it.
7. If all these do not help in 3-4 days or earlier if there is any worsening you will need to send your grandchild to see a doctor.
Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you
Best regards
