Thank you for the query.
As per the history, your mother is 51 yrs old, with a BMI of approx 30.3kg/m2 (
obese). Her latest PPBS was recorded to be 343 mg% (way above the desirable level). I owuld like to know how long she has been suffering from Diabetes, what was her last HbAic level and whether she has any associated comorbidities like
hypertension or
dyslipidemia.
In this scenario, it is advisable that she restarts her medication. Anti diabetic medications should never be stopped, even if sugar levels are normal, since this normalised sugar level or euglycemic status has been achieved through the medications. A complete blood sugar profile is needed to assess the control which comprises of FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar), PPBS (Post Prandial Blood Sugar) and HbAic (should be preferably below 7%). You mother is obese, which also leads to
Insulin resistance and is a risk factor for Type 2
diabetes mellitus.
Persistent high blood sugar levels is assciated with many short term complications like
ketoacidosis and recurrent infection (due to poor immunity) and long term microvascular and macrovascular complications.
It is recommended that you get the blood sugar screening done and visit your
endocrinologist, who can restart the medications in a graded manner. Her dietary regime should be strictly diabetic, with restriction of refined carbohydrates and aerated drinks. A daily exercise regime should be planned (even simple walking will help), which will help her lose weight, and achieve a better control of blood sugar.
Hope this helps you out.
