Suggest Treatment For Diabetes

My 40 year old husband has been having symptoms of diabetes for several months. He went to the dr today and was told to fast for 12 hours and go get a blood test sometime this week. I bought a home blood glucose monitor and we just tested it, his level is 320. How dangerous is that?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
I can understand your concern for your husband's blood sugar levels.
His current blood sugar level is quite high and definitely needs treatment. Before starting treatment a thorough examination and some blood tests are required like kidney functions, Average blood glucose (HbA1c) and Lipid profile. Do visit a diabetologist immediately and get all the blood tests after which medicines can be prescribed. 320 is high but there is nothing alarming about it, keep him well hydrated and start treatment immediately. He may need to be on Insulin injections for some time as sometimes such high sugars do not respond to oral medications.
High blood sugars for a long time can damage kidneys, eyes, and nerves and increase risk for heart diseases. So do begin treatment immediately. Till then also cut out all fruits from his diet and reduce the carbohydrate content of his meal to 75% of what he eats now. Increase salads and vegetables and pulses.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
