Suggest Treatment For Deranged Lipid Profile

I had a heart attack in Dec.2013 and have 6 stents. I was put on Lipitor, but I had to stop because it made my legs ache like crazy. The pain quit 2 days after quitting it. Now my cardiologist wants to put me on Crestor. I am leary because I have lots of diabetes in my family. A friend, an ex-pharmacutical rep, told me I should see a lipid specialist. He has the same problem with statins. Should I see a lipid doctor do you think?

HELLO,
Thanks for using HCM.I have gone through your query.
Basically you are having aches and pains as side effect of statin. But statin group of medicine, be it lipitor or crestor or any other statin,is very essential for your heart. You have 6 stents ,this suggests that you have remarkable fat deposition in arteries forming plaques. Best way to prevent plaque is use of statins. So you must take it.I have observed that supplementation of Vit.D is very useful to prevent aches due to statin.
Yes, it is has been observed in certain trials that incidence of Diabetes is high in patients treated with statin. But yet Cause and Effect relation is not established. The benefits are much beyond this observational incidence.
So i suggest you to continue statin as per suggestion by your treating doctor along with Vit.D supplementaiton.
My best wishes
Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
