Suggest Treatment For Depression

My wife suffers from depression and mood swings. I want to help her. She has a feeling of helplessness and often feels that she can't cope. She has had other medical problems like irregular periods, she has had a mastectomy and recently had been operated for gallstones. We have two small children. I am an IT professional with a demanding job. Otherwise we have a wonderful life together.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi, thank you for using health care magic.
I can understand your concerns.
Along with depression you also reported mood swings, and irregular periods. Mood swing suggest possibility of depression of bipolar type treatment of which differs from unipolar depression. while irregular periods suggest posibility of thyroid dysfunction.
I would suggest to consult psychiatrist as separating bipolar from unipolar depression need careful evaluation and mental status examination in person. treatment of unipolar depression is done with antidepressant. Most commonly used antidepressants are SSRI medicines(sertraline, escitalopram) . While bipolar disorder are treated primarily with mood stabilizers . Also get thyroid function checked.
Hope this will help you.
Regards.
