Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I am 21 years old and suffer from serious bouts of depression and mood swings. I have a history of bipolar disorder in my mothers side of the family, and she believes i could too have it. I have quite a large medical file, due to illnesses when i was younger and I am worried my gp will just label me a drama queen. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Family history of bipolar disorder increases risk of development of this disorder in future. You have depressive symptoms and mood swings and this should not be ignored. If these symptoms are causing impairment then consult a psychiatrist for help.
Medicines like mood stabilisers can help to improve mood swings and will reduce risk of bipolar disorder. Sodium Valproate, Lamotrigine etc are commonly used mood stabilisers in depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of the drug.
I went through your details. There is no necessity that you also have depressive disorder or bi-polar disorder if your ancestors had it. Secondly your attitude is wrong. The information given here never suggest you have depressive disorder or mood swings. Normal disappointment can cause depression and mood swings for a short time. That is not clinical depression. You need to consult a psychologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you suspect your condition, please do not delay.
