Hi, I'm a desperate mum. Have been reading about depression ans bipolar disorder which are very similar. My 22 year old daughter suffers from this and has done so for the past 4 years but is not aware of this problem. I have tried to help her but all she does is push me away and all her love ones.
I am actually desperate as to how I need to approach this problem.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello Welcome to HCM

I have read your question and I can understand your problem. See a lot of individuals with depression don't accept the problem. Stigma attached to psychiatric disorders and visiting a psychiatrist is one of main reason behind this. You have mentioned that when you try to help her she push you away. Try to talk her about her problem in detail. You can ask her to visit psychiatrist just for evaluation so that she become a little compliant for treatment.
If she don't want to take medicines then you can ask her to consult a Psychologist. Psychological treatment in form of counselling, Cognitive Therapy is very useful in depressive disorders.

Hope this helps you, thanks

Psychiatrist Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

You have not mentioned her symptoms but it is common in individuals with depression and bipolar disorder to deny treatment and consulting a psychiatrist. She pushes you when ever you try to help. As she is not getting ready to visit a psychiatrist then best in such case is to visit a psychiatrist without her. If you are primary care giver and the psychiatrist agrees then she can be given medicines which can be mixed with foods or drinks. After some time when patients show improvement with medicines then they can be requested to visit psychiatrist. Medicines like Risperidone, Olanzapine etc are available as liquid preparations and can be given by mixing with food. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
