Suggest Treatment For Depressed Feelings

Im not really sure where to start, Im not suicidal or anything, but Im not happy. I havent been for years. I'm 21 years old and my mum died three years ago. And I'd say I havent felt truely happy since then. I go through phases of being happier and more settled. Then I get down again. It's hard. Im still getting up and going about everyday life, but I dont go out much. I dont know, I sometimes think Im just being stupid...
I have considered going to my doctors, I just cant make myself go. Im too scared. I have a phobia of mental illness. I say phobia, its nothing diagnosed or anything. And I know that I should talk to my friends, or family but I jsut dont feel comfortable...
I just dont know what to do.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi, thanks for writing, i have understood your concerns..

this is depression actually and you shud tell your feelings to your family and friends. whatever you have in mind is fear of being labeled as a psychiatric patient and called as mad..

but psychiatric illnesses are common and they are increasing due to increase in the stress people are facing nowadays..there shud be no shame and fear about this. the problems have increased and you are bothered with that..

if you have phases of happiness and sadness then you shud consult a psychiatrist because it can be a part of emerging bipolar depression and that is more dangerous than depression..

treatment can be done through drugs and conversation that is psychotherapy. but initially you have to take drugs. once the illness is controlled you can be maintained with therapy only.

talk to family and friends and gather courage and visit a psychiatrist,,,that is the best i can suggest you..

i hope this will be helpful to you.. best of luck..

Psychiatrist Dr. Shubham Mehta's  Response
Hello,
This constant feeling of low mood over the years is most probably dysthymia and not the full blown depression.
There is no need to have phobia of anything. Mental illness are just another type of medical disorders which can be treated if treatment is timely started.
I request you to please consult your nearest psychiatrist. If you do not wish to go to a doctor nearby you, you can start tablet nexito 5mg. This is a safe medication and this is the lowest dose.
Please do not ignore your problem before it grows.
Thanks.
