Suggest Treatment For Dark Skin On Toes, knees And Elbows

i have dark nuckles, toes, knees and elbows. having done a bit of research i think its acanthosis. however having looked at the causes of acanthosis i.e obesity, high cholesterol, etc - i dont have any of them. i ve always had darkness around my nuckles, toes, etc. I would like to know if there is a cosmetic procedure which would fix it. Thank you i dont have any medical problems, i m 22.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Apart from obesity, there are many other causes for acanthosis nigricans such as drugs, underlying diseases, genetic etc. You can go for complete health check up as cosmetic procedures give only a temporary cure. Permanent cure can be achieved only by finding the cause of acanthosis nigricans. There are several topical preparations such as Tretinoin, glycolic acid for treatment of acanthosis nigricans. You can go for them under your dermatologist's supervision.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi.
As per your case history of dark skin.
My treatment advice is –

1. Avoid sun-exposure and use a good sun-screen with spf more than 30.
2. Apply a kojic acid cream like kojivit twice daily on dark skin.
3. Take a vitamin b12 supplement once daily for 30days .
4. Other treatment options are oral isotretinoin, topical hydroquinone and chemical peeling done by a dermatologist.

Thanks.
