Suggest Treatment For Dark Lips

Hi, Portions of my top and bottom lips have become black colored, inflammed and highly sensitive. While unattractve, the burning sensation with toothpaste (Toms brand without whitener and no artifical coloring), many foods (spices?) and even warm water is a problem. I put vaseline & aquaphor lip repair (spf) on lips both often and very liberally. I do not smoke and only rarely drink alcohol or caffeine. I have an allergy and zyrtec corrects it (i.e. nasal swelling and rare burning eyes) but dont know what Im allergic to. Any tips?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that pigmentation, burning and inflammation of lips seems to be due to allergic reaction only and in case if you do not know what is causing allergic reaction you should consult an Allergist or an Immunologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and also do allergy tests like Patch test, food challenge test and RAST test to rule out the exact cause of allergy and after knowing the exact allergen preventing exposure to it can help..
In case if still you get frequent exposures an Immunotherapy can be given to reduce the severity of allergic reaction..
As of now take anti allergic medicine like Zyrtec and do cool compresses over the lips..
You can also apply lignocaine gel that is a numbing gel to relieve burning and pain..
Avoid spicy food, sun exposure and drink plenty of water..
Do not use any lip cosmetics and if there is dryness apply cooled aloevera gel..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear ,

As per your query you have dark lips specially occur after brushing your teeth with tooth paste . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like excessive exposure to sun or sun sensitivity , allergic reaction due to some cosmetic product , tooth paste or other things , excessive picking and licking of lips and chapped lips . I would suggest you to note down when ever your lips get irritated and you will find out what particular product do this . Dark complexion of lip sometimes occur due to post inflammatory hyper pigmentation . I would suggest you to take zyrtec or benadryl twice a day , apply Vaseline , protect from sun exposure , apply kojic acid cream twice and consult dermatologist if condition ersist . Doctor may order allergy test and may recommend laser therapy and chemical peeling .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
