Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I caught a cold/chest cold and I'm wheezing. My asthma inhaler is not helping. The symptoms are worse when i'm laying down, and it helps when I sleep in an upright position. could I have Pneumonia. If so can it be treated with antibiotics, or only rest?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of cough, cold and wheezing which seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. The symptoms can also occur due to chest infection or allergic reaction. It also seems to me that there is also laryngitis .Mast cell stabilizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection.
Steam inhalation is very effective for you and also take over the counter anti histamine like benadryl twicxe a day . Consult ENT specialist without any delay. Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents. Avoid cold carbonated beverages.
I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants. Doctor may also refer you to chest specialist , who may order sputum test along with chest x-ray.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
