Hi there.

Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem. I have gone through your post and I understand your concern. I am pleased to answer your query.

Chronic pancreatitis is one condition where due to repeated inflammation, your pancreas has gone for shrinkage and some other changes.

The pain that you have is typical of a pancreatic pain, and you have an 'acute on chronic pancreatitis'. Your pancreas needs rest now, because continued secretion will not only increase your pain, but also will have some unwanted consequences. That's the reason why we ask the patient initially not to take anything orally and give them i.v fluids. Once the pain subsides, appetite picks up and the bowels become active (assessed by the doctor with stethoscope), oral liquids are started. You are in this phase now. You can start taking solid diet only when this phase is over, as decided by your doctor.

A contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen is required for you to assess the anatomy of your pancreas and to detect any abnormality, like pseudocysts, duct obstruction, stones within duct etc. Most of these complications are treatable by Endotherapy. i.e treatment through endoscope, avoiding surgery. Only if endotherapy is not feasible, surgery is needed.

You also may need some enzyme supplements. Please discuss with your doctor about the need for all these in your case.

Pain killers are needed to alleviate the pain associated with this condition. They may be stopped once pain subsides completely. Please avoid taking them except under your doctor's supervision.

If you have the habit of taking alcohol, please abstain from it. Avoid taking fatty foods.

Hope this helps. If you have further queries, feel free to post them. If you are satisfied with this, do give your feed back.

Take care.
Dr.Aliem MD.,
