Hello:
Trazodone has a hypnotic and antidepressant effect; sometimes it is used to treat insomnia. First, you need to know the cause of your insomnia, all patients suffering from it has predisposing, triggering and perpetuating factors; as anxiety,
depression or stress. So the approach and treatment sometimes include more than one specialist or one pill, while it is leaded by a
sleep medicine neurologist.
You need to be assessed by a
psychologist or
psychiatrist to identify and modify behaviors disturbing your sleep. Try to take out of your room TV, computer and any electronic device, including your cellphone and tablet. You can read before going to sleep, but not allowed to watch TV. Also try to do some exercise, just do it before 20:00 h to let your body cool and rest.
Do not have big dinners or spicy food. Also try no to drink a lot of water to avoid waking up during the night.
If you stop breathing while sleeping, it can be due to sleep apnea, and if you snore can be due to
airway obstruction (
Obstructive sleep apnea). A plysomnography would be helpful in diagnosing it or determining the cause of your apnea.
There are some other medications you can try, as zolpidem, triazolam, amitryptiline, ramelteon, doxepin, suvorexant, among others. Just try to consult with a sleep medicine neurologist before you start any treatment.
I hope this helps, if you have any doubt before your appointment, please let me know.
