Suggest Treatment For Chronic Insomnia

I have chronic sleep problem and am finally being prescribed something to help sleep, however both the ambien and trazodone are not helping me to get to sleep nor keep me sleeping. I know all of the atmospheric and other things I need to do to help...nothing does and this has been going on for nearly a year now. It is affecting everything,,,quality of life, etc. Would you recommend another sleep aid? also, I thought I read recently that the FDA just approved a new sleep drug??

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi
Based on what you have shared, i gather that your problem began with lack of sleep a year back and has now progressed to affecting the rest of your day in terms of quality of living.
Since you have tried taking Ambien and Trazodone for the same without much benefit, i am prompted to think that there has to be an underlying problem that is disturbing your sleep.

I would want to know a few more details from you, so i can give a better feedback of your problem:
1. Have you been experiencing any more symptoms like irritability, excess worry, easy tiredness, loss of interest in work or interaction, loss of appetite, low energy levels or negative thoughts for future?
2. Have you indulged in intake of any substances like alcohol/marijuana/others?
3. Have you had any more bodily complaints?

Based on above, we can come to a conclusion on what exactly needs to be treated to relieve you of the insomnia.

Yes, a new drug (from the class of trazodone itself) has been approved by FDA. But before approaching the newer options, i would suggest you to consult a Psychiatrist in person to get to a baseline diagnosis of the insomnia. After this, there is a wide array of options to choose from, which will induce sleep for adequate duration and can be taken for longer periods without much side-effects.

It is difficult for me to suggest particular names of drug options without more information. I hope this clarified your doubt. Happy to help for further queries if any.
