Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had diarrhea since Christmas. It is worse in the morning and gets better by about 10. I am also on prednisone (3mg) for polymyalgia rheumatica. I have called my Gastro doctor who is on vacation. Wants me to go off dairy, lactose and artificial sweeteneers (which i do not use). I also take fosamax for bone density due to the prednisone. I am concerned about going off dairy. They hypothesize that this is a form of IBS. Last summer I had a colonoscopy which started a 2 1/2 month bout of diarrhea which turned out to be blastocystic hominus. Help! DMB
There are persons who cannot use dairy because of similar problems or they do not use for other personal reasons. If you are concerned regarding any nutrients or minerals that you receive from your dairy products, you can consider the use of supplements.
It is possible that discontinuation may help your diarrhea but if there is no improvement after staying off for the required amount of time, then you can consider restarting.
Other causes of diarrhea include: (1)infection (2)high levels of thyroid hormone (3)diabetes - due to an effect on the nerves in the gut (4)side effect of medication (5)inflammatory bowel disease such as crohns disease or ulcerative colitis
If there is no improvement withholding the foods , then one of these may need to be considered.
I hope this helps
