Suggest Treatment For Chronic Cough

My husband has had a cough since last year. It mostly happens when he is awake and especially when he talks. He has also started gagging on his food. He can have coughing spasms so bad I think he is going to vomit. He usually coughs up mucus. No blood. He has been to his doctor who prescribed an inhaler and nasal spray. No one has looked into his throat. What could cause this if you have any ideas. Thanks. Barbara
