Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 70 years old, and recently I have seen occasional constipation turn into chronic constipation. I can think of any major changes in my diet or exercise changes, nor any physical problems that would cause this. My diet is good in its fiber content, and I have increased my fiber with prunes and bran cereal with very slight and very temporary results. Is there any way to combat this problem with a more consistant and predictable medication on a dailybasis?
Hello, 1) Yes, you should try to use stool softeners along with high fiber diet as it will help to reduce straining to pass hard stool 2) Your daily fluid intake should be around 2.5-3 lit 3) Also you should be evaluated by general surgeon to rule out any rectal or anal canal causes which are responsible for constipation. 4) In very rare cases, when patient has persistent constipation in spite of all possible treatment then he/she might require to undergo colonoscopy to find cause for constipation.
