Suggest Treatment For Choking And Severe Cough

i have mucus and it causes choking and makes it hard to breathe. It is very distressing. I had lung surgery 4 years ago in Greenville N.C. I was in intensive care for over 3 weeks. They said I had a long name which means inflammation of the lungs and pheumonia. Ever since then, i have had this mucus problem. My famly dr. sent me to a lung specialist. Had a ct scan. He said it was not my lungs. He sent me to and ENT dr. because he thought it might be a sinus problem. I try to clean my ears with a wash cloth and that makes me cough & choke too. The sinus specialist said I had a sinus infection & blockage. He gave me an antibiotic and i went back in a month. I went back and the sinus infection had cleared up. He said it was not a sinus problem, that i need to go back to the lung dr. This choking & coughing is very scary at times and it happens daily, even when i go to church or in public. What do you suggest?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have choking and severe cough which is because of upper respiratory infection, I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. Take cough expectorants. You should take anti inflammatory medication such as Levocetrizine. You should use throat lozenges and go rinses with warm saline water. Take diet rich in vitamin B12. You should take antibiotics such as Levofloxacin or Azithromycin for 5-7 days. You should Chew a Vitamin C pellet. Take decongestants and mucolytic agents. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. You should get blood test done. You should get an x ray of the chest and pulmonary function tests done as well to know the exact extent of infection and can start treatment accordingly. Gargle with water rinses along with pinch of salt added in it.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
