Suggest Treatment For Burning Sensation In Esophagus

Hi, I swallowed a piece of hot food too quickly about 48 hours ago. I felt a burning sensation in my esophagus for about 5-10 seconds, i was nearly gasping for air, the excruciating pain made me fall on the floor to where i was almost unconscious, i was eventually able to reach for water to help relieve the pain, but it was too late. My esophagus has been hurting and is tender, it hurts to swallow food, and i constantly have the feeling of a foreign body being stuck in my chest. I have been trying to stay away from solids and just taking in mostly liquids. Thankfully there is no respiratory compromise. I plan to make an appointment to see a Doctor if the pain continues, but in the meantime what are your recommendations for treatment? Is there anything i can get over the counter to help with the pain and discomfort and to help heal it? Or would i have to get a prescription for a PPI? Should i be worried if it s taking a long time to heal? Are there any long term complications? Should i be NPO or go on a liquid diet for sometime? Please Advise. Thank you.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi
welcome to HCM,
Although the vast majority of injuries do not require emergency consultation unless its severe..i dont think it has caused severe injury in your case..
A liquid diet may be initiated and the patient can be advanced to a regular diet in 24 to 48 hours ..and yes you require a proton pump inhibitor tab rabeprazole 20 mg two times one in the morning and one in the night before food..if the symptoms are subsiding ..then you can consult your surgeon and get an endoscopy done to see if there is any serious lesion...
good luck..
happy to help
