Suggest Treatment For Bronchitis And Rib Cage Pain

Got diagnosed with bronchitis last Tuesday and put on antibiotics for 1 week. Thursday had to get stronger pain medication because rib pain was not getting better and Tylenol didn t help. Stronger pain medication not working either and still have rib pain especially when cough and sneezing makes pain way worse. Is this normal or are symptoms lasting too long?

Thank you for your question. The pain that you seem to be describing is worrisome for something known as pleural pain, which is a sharp pain that seems to stab with movement, coughing, etc. If it truly is pleural pain, then this could be a sign of inflammation of the lining of the lungs, which can come from many different sources. Regardless of what the cause is, it does require treatment from a physician, and so you should speak with your doctor about the symptoms. There are, of course, many other causes of pinching pain such as common muscular and skeletal complaints that can lead to some of the same symptoms, which is why it is so important to speak with your doctor to accurately diagnose your problem. In the setting of a known lung infection, bronchitis, it is concerning that the inflammation from the bronchitis could be affecting other parts of your lung, and your doctor may feel that additional testing is needed to make sure that your recover appropriately. Again, please speak with your doctor about this new symptom, and determine if he or she would like to begin new treatment or if this is something that is being treated already.
